Looking to find out how a STB is engineered.

Thanks in Advance!!

I am the Engineering Director for a company that builds fitness console equipment. Our multimedia consoles receive normal ATSC/NTSC/QAM signals to display TV Video. I would like to add the capability of receiving IPTV as well. So, in a sense, this multimedia console would act like a STB and TV built in it.

As I am diving into this capability, the main question is how does a STB know how to communicate to an IPTV provider?

Now, in the ATSC/NTSC/QAM, it is easy to understand decode the modulation to determine valid channels and the display per that channel when the user selects it.

Any guidance/direction to what I am looking for is great. Any body at AT&T can point me out to their new product development group would also be appreciated.

Welcome to the Sky Angel IPTV Technical Forums. We hope that you become an active, enthusiastic participant, and that you make every effort to keep these forums an enjoyable and educational environment for every visitor.

As a participant, please keep in mind the following:
• Wikidot’s terms and conditions which you acknowledged during your Wikidot registration.
• The rules in this posting, and all pinned topics in the “Read Before Posting on the Sky Angel Forum”.

We hope that you agree that what we are seeking is nothing more than common courtesy and respectful use of a public resource. If this purpose meets your need, we are pleased to have you on the board and look forward to your participation. Enjoy!

Rules apply to all of the following, unless otherwise specified:
• posts
• signatures
• profiles
• email sent via the forum

1. Who can post here?
Any individual is welcome to post on topics related to Sky Angel IPTV, whether or not you are a subscriber to Sky Angel IPTV. Sky Angel reserves the right to disable the board, limit access to the board, ban users, and edit or delete topics and posts at the discretion of volunteer moderators.

2. You are responsible.
You are responsible for what you post and what you read. All posts made are the opinions and views of the author and not necessarily those of Sky Angel U.S., LLC. Sky Angel is not responsible for the veracity or validity of any information posted here, nor do we vouch for the authenticity or the identity of any of the posters. Sky Angel and its representatives will not be held liable for any information or message posted to any discussion forum and disclaims all liability resulting from any action or inaction taken as a result of reading or posting a message in any discussion forum.

3. No advertising.
Advertisements for products or services other than Sky Angel IPTV or its affiliates are prohibited. Posters may be banned for repeated or egregious violations.

4. Stay on-topic.
Post in the appropriate forum and remain on-topic. Start a new topic if you wish to introduce a new subject. Follow-ups should usually be posted to the original topic. Ignore posting errors and duplicate posts. A moderator will usually fix them. The Sky Angel forum is for talk about the Sky Angel IPTV service.

5. Be original.
The Sky Angel forum is for discussion and your contributions should be specific to this forum. Do not cut-and-paste lengthy messages from other websites or lists. If you want to use a lengthy article elsewhere as the basis of discussion that is fine - simply link to it - quoting a paragraph or two for context is fine.
Note: If you ever receive an email urging you to cross-post something to every source you know—do not post it to the Sky Angel forum.

6. Be civil.
Be civil in all of your posts and refrain from using inflammatory language or expletives. Moderators will determine what is inflammatory using their own judgment, without direction from or appeal to Sky Angel IPTV upper management, its officers, or board of governors, except as may be required by the rules of the business. Sky Angel is a Christian television service—make sure that your actions on this board reflect that goal.

7. No Shouting.
DO NOT POST IN ALL CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please mind your CapsLock key and do not use excessive punctuation or smilies.

8. Avoid hotlinking images.
It is generally a poor idea to link to remote images without permission from the remote site owner. If the owner replaces the image without your knowledge, your post could inadvertantly become very inappropriate. It is perfectly OK to link to images hosted on your own site, or on sites where you pay the cost of bandwidth. If you don't have your own site there are free image hosting services.

9. Keep signatures short.
In the interest of controlling bandwidth and enhancing readability, extravagant or distracting signatures are strongly discouraged. The forum provides a robust profile capability for contact information and personalization. If you use a signature, it may not exceed 5 lines. Images in signatures may not exceed 100 x 500 pixels. No signature shall exceed a height of 100px plus one line of default text. Violations may be edited without notice.

10. Fraud is a crime.
Impersonation of others is a criminal fraudulent act. Individuals who choose to do this will be banned and their Internet service provider may be contacted.

11. Posts that will be edited, deleted, or get you banned.
o Posts containing offensive racial, gender, sexual preference, religious, political, or nationality-bashing language.
o Any post containing language that is offensive in a public, family context.
o Links to inappropriate content.
o Personal attacks on other posters or club members. Comment on ideas, not people.
o Flame bait. In other words: inflammatory messages posted with intent to provoke emotional responses. This is not to be confused with a sincerely held belief or opinion that differs from the norm and is expressed in a meaningful and congenial way.
o Repeated posting of the same or similar messages, and "bumping" a topic more than once.
o Cross-posts and link dumps.
o Posts promoting competitors.
o Any post that violates the letter or spirit of any item described in this list, in these guidelines, or in any announcement or pinned topic posted by a board administrator or moderator.

12. By posting, you agree to the following:
By posting to this discussion board, you agree to be bound by these rules. Your participation should be informative and positive.

Verizion FIOS is another Fiber Optic service, it can provide internet, telephone (voip), and iptv.
It has the capability of high download speeds. It appears you can get download speeds up to 50Mbps.

Verizon FIOS typically uses an ActionTec MI424-WR or a Westell 9100.

Verizon appears to at least be blocking incoming port 80 traffic, and outgoing port 25 traffic.

Link to Verizon FIOS

Link to Uverse website: Uverse

It looks like they only offer speeds up to 18Mbps at this time. They do offer lower "express" packages of 1.5Mbps, and other packages all the way to the 18Mbps package. They offer IPTV and VoIP services as well.

I only recall one case with a SkyAngel customer who had this service, and they were provided the 2Wire 3800 gateway. This entire Uverse system was on WPA: the wireless gateway, the wireless computers, the wireless Uverse IPTV box. This was before the 2.5.0 upgrade so the STB wouldn't connect wirelessly. If WPA is a typical Uverse setup, SkyAngel would have to be hardwired (or their network temporarily reconfigured to WEP) so the STB can connect and download the upgrade, and thus be compatible with WPA.

The main two troublesome VoIP modem series I have came across are:

Arris TM502/TM602 VoIP cable modems

Motorola SBv5220 VoIP cable modems

These seem to cause some buffering issues.
What are your thoughts on these?

I have found some ISPs are willing to lease a second cable modem to their customers. Comcast usually charges $3 more a month for a second cable modem. This way the customer will have one modem dedicated to their VoIP service and another modem dedicated to providing bandwidth to the home network and SkyAngel.

Theoretically this should solve any VoIP related problems if the customer is using a VoIP cable modem.

After extensive troubleshooting, we have once again confirmed Integrity Online is incompatible with Sky Angel’s IPTV service. During a conference call with a customer and Integrity Online, Integrity representative recommended we set up DMZ on the customer’s router to allow our STB full access to the internet. With Zyxel’s help, we set up DMZ on a specific port on sub’s router, using 192.168.2.85 as the IP address. We set up static IP on STB. STB went to “Unable to Access Requested Page” quicker than usual, but still no access. Customer set up same static IP on PC and hardwired to DMZ’d port. PC was unable to access internet outside proxy.

I spoke to a customer this past Saturday (8/23) who had 11 mbps through Timewarner. He was using a wireless connection. He had a Belkin F5D9230. He also had 3 laptops. On the stb he was getting .36 mbps in his living room. On his laptop in another room getting over 10 mbps on speedtest.net, but when brought into his living room he had no connection whatsoever on the computer. I asked about other wireless devices. He had a Logitech wireless audio sysytem. He turned it off to test. The stb then got 2.99 mbps and his computer over 10 mbps. For future reference this may be something to ask the customer about. Sorry I didn't post this earlier.
